It's so simple, yet so often ignored. When someone says, "Hello," you greet them. In person, we get it. We say hello to people who walk in the door or at least smile to people as they walk past. "How can I help you?" We don't have to be reminded to say that.

But it's a different story with email. So many times, people write their email addresses on a list or fill out a form online only to be greeted with total silence. (As parents, we know how nice total silence can be, but we're also well aware of its life-threatening danger.)

Having no welcome message is the lethal kind of silence.
